Beyond the Square CAL

I am in a CAL (Crochet A Long) on Ravelry.  We are doing one motif a week from Edie Eckman's book "Beyond the Square" Crochet Motifs.  Doing just one motif a week is not too daunting a task and it is fun to see what others are doing.  The author is even keeping tabs on us, and posting some helpful suggestions and encouragement along the way.  If you have never joined a group on Ravelry before, this would be a good way to get acquainted with the process.  I am pretty proud of myself . . . uploading photos to Flickr and posting them on a group site . . . and now blogging about it.  I may figure out the computer side of my craft eventually!

The first four motifs from the CAL . . . I need to branch out on my color scheme!

Aunt Jo's Prayer Shawl

I have become a bit of a yarn snob, and usually do not like to use acrylic yarns - especially for garments.  However, this needed to be machine washable, and I was pleasantly surprised at how it turned out.

The yarn is James Brett Marble Chunky.  I used a large hook and worked in the front loop only . . . and this gave a nice drape to the fabric. The beautiful, self-striping reds and corals made it hard to give away the final product!

This pattern is suitable for beginners . . . it is a rectangle of single crochets, with a simple ruffle of trebles.

Baby Frou-Frou Preemie Hat

Twelve inches around and 3.25 inches tall - so tiny!
A fun little hat that only takes a few minutes to crochet . . . perfect for our latest charity project at Lovin' Knit.  Cascade Fixation is wonderfully stretchy and perfect for little hats!

You can add a couple of increase rounds to this one, to size it up for a larger baby - and, I guess if it's a boy, you could drop the frou-frou!
